Chapter fifteen

Aisling

Iwake up in the cozy warmth of a bed...and I suddenly remember the last few days.

Being kidnapped by Oberon, taken out to the city's edge. Sleepless nights while I watched him to make sure he wouldn't die while he detoxed, wondering if Gunnar was even alive.

Then...the safehouse.

Not Vance's mansion.

I'm not going back there...not yet, or maybe ever.

I sit up and toss the blankets off, then I go over to the dresser drawer to pull out some clothes. There are a pair of sweats and a hoodie that are way too big for me--and probably absurdly expensive, given how soft they are--but I make it work. I exhale as I listen to see if there's any trace of the guys, and I'm surprised when I realize they're talking.

That was pretty high up on the list of things I never expected...but they're somehow behaving.

I open the door quietly, but of course both alphas hear me, their gaze sweeping across the room as I come out into the living room. They're sitting together at the kitchen table, coffee in front of them and a new pot brewing. I give them a skeptical look as I walk over to the coffee pot, morning light spilling through the rain-streaked window.

"We all good?" I ask quietly.

Oberon laughs softly. "All good."

"We were just talking about you, actually," Gunnar says.

"Were you now?"

"About packing up."

I stop short, coffee in my hand but not pouring. I lick my lips and glance over my shoulder, finding Gunnar's gaze steady.

"Are you...are you sure you're okay with that?" I ask.

He opens his mouth to respond, but a phone suddenly rings, a sharp trill that slices through the thick silence. None of us has a cell right now--not with everything going on--but I realize there's a satellite phone on the counter, sleek and shiny. Gunnar gets up to answer, glancing at the two of us.

"Hello?"

I hear someone talk on the other end, and Gunnar's face hardens.

"Vance," Gunnar answers, and his voice is all business, a hard edge to the soft vowels. His eyes flick to me, hold for a moment filled with something unsaid. "Hold on...I'm going to put you on speaker phone."

He changes the settings, putting the phone down on the counter as we all listen. Vance's voice is sharp, commanding, sounding every bit the Archangel of Celestial Hills.

"Listen up," Vance's voice crackles through the speaker, "we've got a raid planned on Dreamland tomorrow. Aisling, Oberon, you two are in. You know the layout better than anyone."

I swallow, the taste of adrenaline already bitter on my tongue. Dreamland, my old cage, the place where shadows held more power than the light. Oberon shifts beside me, the memory just as raw for him.

"And Gunnar?" There's a pause, a low hum of a warning in Vance's tone. "You sit this one out. Got it?"

Gunnar's hands clench into fists, knuckles white. "Like hell I will. I'm coming."

"Dammit, Gunnar," Vance growls, "just once, do what you're told."

"Can't," Gunnar shoots back, voice steady as a drumbeat. "Not when it comes to her.
